Sarah: on the issue of coatings and durability. We have run numerous tests over the years but mostly focused on adhesion in a number of settings including cycling of the coated product and completing pull tests before and after. This combined with infield experience of pulling samples off jobs that have been at least 5 years in service. Our experience has been with epoxy coatings and we have found that coatings properly manufactured for their intended purpose and applied properly with sufficient substrate preparation have a good record of durability. In the development of standards at both IAPMO and with NES we focused in part on adhesion and went as far as to increase the adhesion standards set by AWWA C210 which more or less is for larger diameter piping systems. Our focus has been on what we refer to as barrier coatings for small diameter pressurized piping systems ie: 4" and smaller, where internal pressures, water velocities and temperature ranges typically play a greater role on wear and tear on the coating when compared to the general dynamics within a large diameter delivery or storage system. Our focus has been coating of pipes on the private property side of the property line ie: inside buildings.  I am attaching a few standards that we have been involved with. On a slightly other note on durability, I understand that EBAYMUD uses epoxy coatings in water storage facilities and distribution systems. The coatings are expected to last 20 years. I do not have on hand their inspection and initial testing criteria for coatings. Attached is a copy IAPMO's IGC 189, and a ICC-NES evaluation report for epoxy coating pipe.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your interest in the NSF Drinking Water Additives Lead Task Group.  You should have already received an email from admin@standards.nsf.org with login information that will get you to the website where the materials are posted that have been distributed to the task group.  I'm attaching a guide for navigating the site that will hopefully help you familiarize yourself with the site.  Our next conference call is on the calendar on that site, scheduled for Wednesday, 2/20 from 2-3:30 pm ET.  The dial-in information is below.

Please let me know if I can assist you in any way as you catch up on the issue at hand.

Thanks!
Sarah
